Completed in 2008, Sailing City · Qingdao was installed near the exit of Qingdao Liuting International Airport as a gateway sculpture associated with the Beijing Olympic sailing events held in Qingdao.
The sculpture is composed of several large, curved stainless-steel forms that rise, intersect, and converge into the silhouette of sails. Red, blue, yellow, green, and dark-toned elements are arranged around a central vertical structure, creating a strong upward movement.
Horizontal panels within the main sail carry the words “QINGDAO SAILING CITY,” while the base identifies the city in Chinese. The combination of sail forms and written signs gives the work both a symbolic and directional character.
Rather than reproducing a specific boat, the sculpture extracts the tension and curvature of sails filled by wind. The crossing arcs suggest movement across water, while the open spaces between them allow the sky to become part of the composition.
Placed at an airport gateway, the work connects the act of arrival with Qingdao’s coastal identity and its role as the host city of the Beijing 2008 Olympic sailing competitions.
