Completed in 2011, Mongolian Chess Square is a large-scale public sculpture ensemble installed near Ulan Mulun Lake in Kangbashi, Ordos.

The square is organised around a complete set of thirty-two monumental Mongolian chess pieces, arranged in two opposing formations. Lions, horses, camels, ox-drawn carts, and other figures associated with grassland life are transformed into large bronze sculptures.

The two sides are distinguished through contrasting gold- and silver-toned surface treatments. Under changing daylight, the reflective surfaces create a strong visual opposition across the square and reinforce the ceremonial character of the chess formation.

Each piece is individually modelled and placed on a granite pedestal. Decorative metal railings with flowing patterns connect the sculptures to the visual language of Mongolian ornament and unify the extensive site.

Rather than enlarging conventional chess pieces directly, the project translates the structure of the game into a landscape of animals, vehicles, movement, and confrontation. Visitors can walk between the two formations and experience the chessboard from within.

Through its combination of traditional strategy, nomadic cultural imagery, and monumental public scale, the work transforms Mongolian chess into an open urban space for viewing, movement, and cultural memory.
