This public sculpture takes the form of a slowly unfolding theatrical curtain, marking the centenary of spoken drama in China and symbolizing the emergence of the modern stage within Chinese cultural history.

Behind the curtain stands an open book bearing two masks—one smiling, one weeping—referencing the dual nature of drama and of human life itself: comedy and tragedy, joy and sorrow.

Rather than commemorating a specific event or figure, the work frames theater as a shared script continuously written by society. The stage becomes both a site of performance and a metaphor for lived experience, where individual lives unfold within a collective cultural narrative.
