Created in 2001, Rhythmic Grace is one of three sports-themed sculptures installed in the outdoor area of Guangzhou Gymnasium for the Ninth National Games of China. The other two works depict high jump and gymnastics.

The sculpture takes badminton as its subject. Three successive moments of a single athlete’s movement are overlapped and interwoven into one continuous composition, transforming the sequence of play into a unified sculptural structure.

The figures are constructed from perforated stainless steel. The open metal surface allows light and the surrounding landscape to pass through the bodies, reducing the visual weight of the material and emphasizing the speed, extension, and fluidity of athletic movement.

The three poses suggest different phases of badminton play, including preparation, striking, and recovery. Rather than presenting a single frozen instant, the work brings several moments together, allowing movement to unfold within one spatial form.

Together with the high-jump and gymnastics sculptures, the work forms part of a public-art group devoted to the rhythm, strength, and grace of competitive sport.
