Completed in 2001, Sacred Flame is installed in the outdoor plaza of Guangzhou Gymnasium, a venue designed by French architect Paul Andreu for the Ninth National Games of China.
The sculpture is formed from sweeping bands and curved planes of red-painted stainless steel. Interwoven, folded, and rising through space, these structures evoke both the unfolding form of a kapok blossom and the upward movement of a ceremonial flame. Kapok has been the official city flower of Guangzhou since 1982.
Its continuous curves create a sense of rotation, expansion, and upward momentum. The intense red surface reinforces the visual impression of heat, vitality, and movement, while the open structure allows the surrounding landscape and sky to pass through the sculpture.
Set against the green plaza, the work brings together the regional symbol of Guangzhou and the energy of competitive sport, forming a prominent public marker for the Ninth National Games.
