Completed in 2005, Charm of Yangko Dance is a six-metre-high stainless-steel sculpture installed in Shenyang, Liaoning Province.
The composition unfolds horizontally through six stylized dancers. Angular bodies, fan-shaped planes, and sweeping curved bands are connected into a continuous sculptural sequence. A vivid red painted surface unifies the separate figures and gives the work a strong presence within the open urban space.
Rather than modelling the dancers as solid, realistic bodies, the work reduces their torsos and limbs to folded planes, sharp diagonals, and simplified silhouettes. Long arcs pass above, behind, and between the figures, transforming individual gestures into a shared rhythm.
Repeated fans and alternating poses create a visual pulse across the entire group. The open spaces between the figures allow the surrounding trees, architecture, and sky to enter the composition, reducing the visual weight of the metal structure.
Inspired by the festive movement of northeastern yangko traditions, the sculpture translates folk dance into a contemporary abstract language. Its focus is not on reproducing a single performance scene, but on expressing collective movement, rhythmic continuity, and the energy of public celebration.
