Created in 2009, The Other Shore is a bronze public sculpture installed on German-style Street in Qingdao.

The work depicts an elongated female figure rising vertically with her arms extended. The broad cloak unfolding behind her resembles a pair of wings, giving the body a sense of suspension and upward flight.

At the base, the figure stands upon a group of heavy, broken chains. The contrast between the downward weight of the chains and the open, ascending body establishes the central tension of the composition: confinement below and release above.

The sculpture does not describe a specific historical event. Through the transformation from chains to wings, it presents a more universal image of breaking free from restraint and moving toward freedom, hope, and an imagined “other shore.”

Set among the historic architecture of Qingdao’s old urban district, the work connects personal liberation with the changing memory of the city.
