Created in 2006, Wangfujing is a monumental granite relief wall commissioned for an interior public space associated with the administration of Beijing’s Wangfujing commercial district.

The work combines historical texts, chronological markers, architectural images, and numerical codes within a single layered composition. At the centre, the large raised characters “王府” dominate a circular field, establishing the visual identity of the district.

Raised dates, extending from 1267 to 2006, move across a sequence of stepped blocks. Rather than forming a conventional linear timeline, they appear as fragments embedded within the surface of the wall, marking different moments in the development of Wangfujing.

The upper background brings together passages from historical records and repeated binary digits. Below, reliefs of traditional shopfronts, historic commercial buildings, modern architecture, streets, and human activity form a compressed urban landscape.

The contrast between classical Chinese writing and binary notation suggests changing methods of recording and organising urban information. Historical documents, commercial architecture, and contemporary data systems are therefore presented as different layers within the continuing life of the district.

The work transforms the history of Wangfujing into a large-scale visual archive—part timeline, part cityscape, and part information interface.
