Created in 2008, Teasing the Crab is a bronze public sculpture installed in Bayuquan, Yingkou, Liaoning Province.
The work depicts two barefoot children cautiously approaching an oversized crab. One child crouches close to the ground and reaches forward, while the other leans over from behind, creating a scene filled with curiosity, hesitation, and excitement.
The crab is deliberately enlarged far beyond its natural scale. Its raised claws, segmented legs, and broad shell give it a strong physical presence, turning an ordinary seaside encounter into a playful visual drama.
The contrast in scale between the children and the crab is central to the work. Seen through a child’s imagination, the small creature of the tidal flats becomes enormous, strange, and slightly intimidating.
Inspired by everyday life along the coast of Bayuquan, the sculpture recalls the experience of children searching for and playing with crabs near the shoreline. Its low placement and open composition allow the scene to remain close to the scale and rhythm of the surrounding public landscape.
