Completed in 2002, The Key is installed at the main entrance of 219 Park in Anshan, Liaoning Province.
The design draws on an interpretation of Anshan’s geographical outline as resembling a key. This regional form is transformed into a monumental vertical sculpture marking the entrance to the park.
The outer body is cast in dark bronze, creating a solid and clearly recognizable silhouette. Irregular openings cut through the central and lower sections, where delicate metal mesh structures are inserted. The contrast between the heavy bronze mass and the translucent mesh produces two opposing spatial conditions: solidity and openness.
As daylight passes through the hollow areas, the sculpture changes with the position of the sun, producing shifting patterns of light and shadow. The key is therefore presented not only as a fixed urban symbol, but also as a structure activated by its surrounding environment.
Placed at the threshold of the park, the work connects the image of the key with ideas of entrance, access, and the opening of a new urban space.
