Created in 2004, Olympic Spirit is a monumental granite relief wall developed during the period following Beijing’s successful bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games.

At the centre of the composition, three-dimensional openwork Olympic rings project outward from the wall, accompanied by the word “OLYMPIC” and a laurel motif. The surrounding relief unfolds as a continuous sequence of athletes engaged in winter and summer sports, including skiing, ice hockey, swimming, athletics, and equestrian events.

The figures are arranged across a textured stone surface together with circular sporting emblems and commemorative medallions. Diagonal lines running through the background connect the separate athletic scenes and create a sustained sense of speed and forward movement.

Rather than presenting each event as an isolated image, the work compresses multiple forms of competition into a unified visual field. The raised figures, rough background, and projecting rings create changing layers of light and shadow across the wall.

By combining architectural scale, carved relief, and freestanding sculptural elements, Olympic Spirit transforms the Olympic emblem from a flat graphic symbol into the spatial centre of a large public artwork.
