Created in 2009, Rhythm of the Sea is a series of five openwork bronze relief panels integrated into the architectural structures of Shanhai Square in Bayuquan, Yingkou.
Each panel is organised around marine life associated with the coastal environment, including seahorses, seals, crabs, sharks, octopuses, and fish. The animals are surrounded by curling waves, aquatic plants, and flowing ornamental lines.
Drawing on the visual language of traditional Chinese openwork carving, the compositions transform marine forms into interconnected patterns. Solid bronze figures and open spaces alternate across the panels, allowing light, air, and the surrounding seascape to pass through the work.
Installed within the openings of the square’s white stone walls, the panels function as both architectural decoration and framed views. The contrast between dark bronze and pale stone strengthens the clarity of the marine imagery.
Rather than presenting the sea as a single landscape, the series constructs a rhythmic visual field through repeated curves, circulating lines, and varied marine creatures, connecting the architecture of the square with the coastal environment beyond.
