Created in 2008, Slam Dunk was developed as a basketball-themed public sculpture for the venue of the Beijing Olympic basketball competitions.
The work brings together several successive phases of athletic movement within a single vertical composition. Running, rising, extending, and reaching toward the basket are compressed into a layered structure of overlapping human bodies.
Rather than modelling the athletes through smooth, realistic surfaces, the figures are constructed from faceted forms and perforated stainless steel. The geometric planes emphasize changes in direction, muscular tension, and the explosive force of the jump.
The perforated metal allows light and the surrounding sky to pass through the bodies. This reduces the visual weight of the large-scale structure and gives the figures a shifting appearance as the viewer moves around the sculpture.
The upward accumulation of the figures transforms the act of the slam dunk into a sculptural sequence. The work does not represent one isolated moment, but makes the movement toward height visible as a continuous spatial process.
