Created in 2003, The Eight Eccentrics of Tianqiao is a group of bronze sculptures inspired by the folk entertainers and street performances once associated with Beijing’s Tianqiao district.
Rather than portraying formal historical figures, the works focus on the distinctive gestures, costumes, props, and performance methods of popular entertainers. Each sculpture presents an independent street act, bringing together acrobatics, folk dance, shadow puppetry, and comic performance.
Banner Acrobat A performer supports a towering banner-like apparatus while extending his body in a strongly unbalanced pose. The extreme contrast between the human figure and the vertical structure emphasizes physical control, tension, and risk.
Fan Performer Dressed in traditional padded clothing, the performer raises a pair of large fans while singing or calling out. The open mouth, backward-leaning body, and exaggerated gesture convey the lively atmosphere of a public street performance.
Donkey-Dance Performer A female performer rides a theatrical donkey prop while balancing across wooden benches. Her raised fan and extended posture combine humour, movement, and the illusion of riding into a single sculptural scene.
Travelling Shadow-Puppet Showman A street entertainer stands beside a portable puppet booth, holding a small performance tool in one hand. The booth, stage equipment, and human figure are integrated into a compact representation of an itinerant theatrical trade.
Bowl-Balancing Acrobat A muscular performer balances a tower of bowls on his head while holding his body in a difficult horizontal pose. The work concentrates attention on bodily strength, balance, and disciplined control.
Through realistic modelling and theatrical movement, the sculpture group preserves the visual character of Tianqiao’s popular entertainment culture and recalls the everyday public life of old Beijing.
