Completed in 2011, Wangfujing Plaque and Reliefs is an architectural art ensemble installed on the façade of a commercial building on Beijing’s Wangfujing Street.
The project was created following the reconstruction of the original building. As the earlier relief installation could no longer be accommodated within the new façade, its central visual identity was reorganised into a vertical plaque accompanied by two bronze relief panels.
The central plaque is set against a vivid blue mosaic field. Three large gold-toned Chinese characters, “王府井,” form the primary visual focus, while the surrounding bronze frame incorporates traditional ornamental motifs. The contrast between blue, gold, dark bronze, and the orange architectural surface gives the work a strong presence within the commercial streetscape.
Two openwork bronze reliefs are positioned above and below the plaque. One presents scenes associated with historic Wangfujing, including traditional shops, merchants, pedestrians, and long-established commercial names. The other depicts later urban life through department stores, contemporary goods, bicycles, shoppers, and changing forms of commerce.
Rather than reproducing the earlier installation directly, the work adapts its historical and commercial imagery to a new architectural structure. The plaque establishes the identity of the street, while the reliefs extend that identity into a visual narrative of continuity and change.
Integrated into the building façade, the ensemble connects architectural renovation with the preservation of Wangfujing’s commercial memory.
